The name "Obsidian" is derived from the name "Obsius" of an ancient Roman explorer. Obsidian is an amorphous gemstone, a naturally occurring volcanic glass, and is considered the "national stone" of Mexico. Obsidian is formed when the temperature outside the lava falls rapidly so that the magma containing silica cools and solidifies quickly without allowing enough time for the mineral crystals to grow and form a glassy substance. Because of this unique formation process, obsidian also contains 1% to 2% water inside. Obsidian is an igneous rock found mostly in areas with volcanic activity, such as Hawaii in the United States, Japan, and Java in Indonesia.

The appearance of pure obsidian is usually black. Still, it varies depending on the presence of inclusions, such as iron and other transitional elements that may make the obsidian dark brown to black, with a few exceptions such as red, green, orange, yellow and gray.

Obsidian is hard but brittle and fragile, so it has sharp edges when fractured. Because of this property, obsidian was often used to make cutting and piercing tools and was also used as the blade for surgical knives. Obsidian jewelry is now commonly found in the marketplace, mostly beaded and strung as bracelets or as sculptural art pieces for wear or indoor display.

The Legend of Obsidian

Legend has it that long ago, a group of white men occupied Indian land and drove them to a barren area. Later, 75 brave Apache warriors went out to fight in hopes of reclaiming their land, but 50 died in the first wave of fire, and the remaining 25 survivors were forced to a cliff. The Apache warriors were determined to jump off the cliff rather than die at the hands of the whites, losing all the soldiers and no survivors.

The wives of the soldiers shed tears of sorrow when they learned of the tragic news, and when the tears fell to the ground, they transformed into small black stones, hence the name "Apache Tears". It is said that whoever owns this black stone will never cry with grief because the Apache maidens have dried all their tears for the owner of the obsidian.
